Thursday Oct 17, 2024
Thursday Oct 17, 2024
Senior, Master Sergeant (USAF, ret.) Israel “DT” Del Toro’s fight to survive began on the side of a mountain near Qalat, Afghanistan, after his Humvee detonated a concealed landmine. He suffered third-degree burns over 80 percent of his body, as well as losing fingers on both hands from the blast. His comrades kept him conscious until DT could be airlifted out by reminding him of the promise he’d made that he would not leave his three year-old son without a father. (https://deltorostrong.com)
That promise, along with the love and support of his family – his wife, his son, and his Air Force comrades – made possible a story of overcoming the greatest of odds. A recipient of the Pat Tillman Award at the 2017 ESPYs, DT now shares his story of triumph with audiences across the country, inspiring those that hear it to push themselves further if they know what they’re fighting for.

Dawn Lissy, Chair and Founder of NeuroAlly Family Fund
Saturday Jul 20, 2024
Saturday Jul 20, 2024
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates 20% or 1 in 5 Americans fall into the "neurodivergent" category, which includes Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourettes and others. These are NOT the same as medically diagnosed chemical imbalances which are associated with depression and anxiety.
The confusion comes when the two crossover, making it difficult to ascertain which variable is presenting: the chemical imbalance or the neuro-wiring or neurodivergent behavior.
Local biomedical engineer, Dawn Lissy and her husband, Chris Lissy founders at Empirical Technologies have launched a new non-profit in town called NeuroAlly Family Fund (NAFF) to help families and individuals impacted by neurodivergence in the household. The testing and equipping of resources to effectively manage neurodivergence for the individual and family are cost prohibitive, ranging from tens of thousands of dollars, into well over $100K.
NeuroAlly Family Fund provides a financial bridge and a spectrum of creative solutions that foster awareness, empathy, and healthy interactions for neurodivergent individuals and families.
Hear Dawn's family story and learn how you can get more involved with NAFF, and better understand what resources are available for you and your loved ones.

Karen Fallahi, Executive Director-DBSA of COS
Saturday Apr 20, 2024
Saturday Apr 20, 2024
For Karen Fallahi, Board Member Emeritus of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance of COS, the topic is very personal.
It started with a mother’s love of her son. Erik suffered from bipolar disorder, and when his life was cut short, his mother, Karen Fallahi, went into action.
She founded the Colorado Springs chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (then known as the Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association) in 1994, and 4 people attended the first meeting. Today, we sponsor 11 free self-help support groups for people living with a variety of mood disorders, and their family and friends.
Along with growth and interest in its activities comes the need for more volunteers to do the work of operating the library, producing the newsletter, and facilitating at support group meetings. Teamwork is essential in our operation – if one person is unavailable or not well, another has to be ready to take his or her place. In this manner DBSA-CS builds up its people, gives them a sense of accomplishment, and offers them chances to exercise leadership among their peers, without the fear of criticism or failure.

Monday Mar 25, 2024
Monday Mar 25, 2024
First Lady of Colorado Springs, Abbey Mobolade probably never considered she'd be in political life as a young midwest gal born and raised in South Bend, Indiana.
Initially an English Major to become a teacher, she was inspired by the nurses who attended to her father after he endured bypass surgery and a heart attack, Abbey was motivated to get her nursing degree and and start practicing.
Then, life offered up a young, charismatic pastor named Yemi - aka "Mobo". Their life journey brought them to Colorado Springs after a year of long-distance relationship, where Abbey picked up nursing roles in Pueblo and later in the multi-specialty intensive care units at Penrose Main.
Today she has fully embraced the role of First Lady of America's 39th largest economic region ($40B GMP), getting involved in both her passions: education and nursing as well as other community-centric project.

Co-founder & CEO, The Exodus Road - Laura Parker
Thursday Mar 07, 2024
Thursday Mar 07, 2024
When you think of slavery, what are the images that come to mind?
Hand-drawn references in your old history book of the African slave trade.
Jews enslaved by Pharaoh in Egypt as depicted in movies.
1800s images of the early American south, cotton plantations, and the Civil Rights movement?
For all those millions of human beings in the aforementioned examples, theirs was a reality so harsh and brutal - so scary and hopeless, that no literary or media translation could ever capture the true nature of what it was to wake every day of life and be under the complete control of another person-all against your will.
This is all ancient history, right?
To call that perception naive is a gross understatement. In the modern world, we call this anomaly in the human condition, Human Trafficking. Millions of modern day human beings are trapped in labor and sex trafficking against their will. The porn industry, positioned as private, harmless entertainment, fuels demand for a corrupt market that knows no boundaries when it comes to providing what consumers want. Cell phones in kids hands exponentially accelerates access to inappropriate content. This is a war on a level not seen before in human history. And millions - billions are going to be impacted by it on some level.
It's here in southern Colorado. It's in our neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and probability suggests there's even been aspects of this within our families.
Uncomfortable yet? Good. Now hear the heart of a woman and her husband who were so moved by this reality, they did something about it. Meet Laura Parker, CEO, Co-founder of The Exodus Road...
This human tragedy must end. It starts with us, not someone else.

Michael Allen has dutifully served as the 4th Judicial District's, District Attorney since his first election in 2020. DA Allen is running for re-election in November 2024 for the district which includes all of El Paso and Teller Counties in Colorado.
Under Allen's leadership, the 4th Judicial District DA's office is on track to prosecute more than 95% of the cases that are presented to the court, and will bring 400 cases to trial.
Allen credits excellent police work on the part of local and federal agencies who are conducting thorough investigations, following protocols, and presenting organized cases to the DA's office. He also credits the team at the DA's office who are committed to holding bad actors into account where other districts, even in Colorado, are taking a far more lenient approach to criminal justice.
A strong District Attorney's office equates to:
Strong economic vitality
Public safety, and
Confidence among law enforcement agencies who know prosecutors will do their job of holding into account those who commit crimes.
